A prolific burglar jumped out of the window of a house he had raided and got away on a motorbike as the homeowner returned, a court has heard.

The victim returned to her home in Fakenham Road, Taverham, and saw a woman she did not know in her driveway before noticing a man leap out of a front window.

Norwich Crown Court heard Lee Holden then jumped on a motorbike with his lookout accomplice and £2,000 worth of goods he had stolen.

Hannah Gladwell, prosecuting, said items worth £2,110 were taken in the burglary, including an engagement ring.

The day after the raid, on September 22 last year, Holden, 46, was spotted by police on a motorbike.

He ran off but was stopped by an officer who he punched before running off again.

He then headed into a garage and picked up a large mallet which he threatened the officer with.

Holden, who has 36 convictions for 142 offences, including 13 dwelling burglaries, was tasered but it proved ineffective.

He was tastered again after he threatened the officer with a metal sheet.

Holden, formerly of Netherwood Green, Norwich, appeared in court for sentencing on Monday (March 6) having admitted burglary, assaulting an emergency worker and riding a motor vehicle without insurance.

Passing a four-year jail sentence Judge Andew Shaw said Holden had an "appalling record for dwelling house burglaries".

He also said Holden had been "utterly out of control" during the attack on the officer.

He added: "Anyone who assaults police officers or emergency workers who are doing their duty can expect the courts to deal with them appropriately".

Oliver Haswell, mitigating, said Holden deserved "some credit" for his pleas.

Holden was also given six penalty points on his licence for riding with no insurance.
