Scores of new homes could be created at the site of a former school, with council bosses looking to sell the property.

There has long been speculation about the future of the five-acre site, off Woodside Road in Norwich.

And it has emerged that it could be sold off to make way for housing.

The Norfolk County Council-owned site was once the location of Woodside First and Nursery school.

More recently, Woodside One Neighbourhood Nursery has been based at the site.

That nursery, which was run by the council, shut last year.

Members of the council's Conservative-controlled cabinet are being asked to agree to sell the site.

Known as the Woodside complex, the site includes the Woodside Centre Community Hub, Norwich Professional Development Centre and a sensory support unit.

With the nursery shut, the site, which includes a registration office, is occupied by staff from the council's children's services department.

But County Hall officers are recommending relocating all services and staff, so the site can be redeveloped.

The jobs of six staff who run the site, are in question, with the council saying they are "being consulted about the future of their roles".

The council's adult social services department has identified the site as having the potential to be sold to a company which would turn it into housing for independent
living/extra care
.

But if that does not come to pass, it is proposed the site would be sold on the open market by auction or tender.

Greg Peck, the council's cabinet member for commercial services and asset management, said: "We are looking at using the Woodside site for affordable specialist housing for people with care and support needs and will be working with a registered social landlord to provide this."

The cabinet will make a decision on Monday (March 6).
