The Norwich tour guide and author of Canary Companion shares his favourite things about the county
Memory
Where do you start? Perhaps the most unusual was when I saw the Olympic torch brought to Norwich in 2012. After seeing it carried in one summer evening, I went to Pulls ferry early the next morning. A young woman boarded a long rowing boat and proudly held it aloft as she was rowed to Bishops Bridge, accompanied by a flotilla of canoes and a cheering crowd. She then alighted and ran up Kett’s Hill towards Yarmouth. It was such a unique experience against the backdrop of the best of historical Norwich
Landmark
I’m always fascinated by Scolt Head. I’ve been out to it by ferry and had a swim and walked back. I’ve also canoed there as well. My wife and I enjoy taking some of our grandchildren to Burnham Overy Staithe, which is fun and a bit different.
Beach
I thought the other day when I was watching the waves crashing ashore and the sun shining in blue skies and feeling the fresh air, how lucky we are to have such a range of beaches. They are all nice in their own way, but perhaps Wells, watching the flow of the tide coming in and out.
Town/city/village
Being a city tour guide, it has to be Norwich. I’ve learnt so much about its amazing heritage and history over the last 10 years and can now lead over a dozen different tours. It is so fulfilling to show visitors and locals all the wonderful buildings and surprises the city has.
Place to eat
We are lucky having such an abundance of fish and chip shops, and there is nothing nicer than tucking in overlooking the beach and sea, particularly at Cromer and Sheringham.
Pub
Being a canoeist I love to paddle to The Locks Inn at Geldeston, a community owned pub by the river with a lovely grassed area and good beer. Or in the city, the Red Lion at Bishop Bridge is superb.
Attraction or day out
Having been born in Oulton Broad I have always been attracted by the rivers and broads. I regularly canoe with a friend all over the Broads, everyone is so friendly, the wildlife rewarding and there’s always the chance to see a wherry or special boat.
Shop
Jarrold was always a favourite of mine as a child, with the book department. And navigating the rabbits’ warren of Thorns is always interesting.
Export
I’ve been an avid city supporter for 60 years and having written The Canary Companion I feel the football club is known throughout the world. I always think foreign tv watchers must love our unique colours and everyone in Britain must have heard of Delia. I just hope we can get to the top table again soon.
