A bank in a Norfolk seaside town is set to be replaced by a "cashless pop-up".

Barclays has confirmed plans to close its branch in the High Street at Hunstanton on April 12.

The business, which has closed hundreds of rural branches along with other major banks in recent years, said just 21 customers now used it regularly.

It said in a statement: “Our customers’ behaviour has changed significantly in recent years, with the majority now choosing online banking.

"This is reflected at Hunstanton branch, and as we adapt, we are finding new ways to support our customers by maintaining our community presence with options for customers who still require in-person support.

“In Hunstanton we plan to open a Barclays Local – a pop-up cashless banking site where customers can meet a colleague face-to-face for banking support, as they would in a branch and without the need to travel."

The bank added it was working with the local community to identify a suitable location for the new service.

The cashpoint machine outside the imposing building will also be closing.

Barclays said customers could use the machine at the Nationwide, on nearby Greevegate, which will become the resort's last remaining bank when it closes.

Barclays added less than 10pc of banking transactions now take place within one of its branches.

It said customers could use the Barclays app, telephone banking or online banking to make transactions, or use any Post Office.

Its nearest branches to Hunstanton will be in King's Lynn or Fakenham from April 12.

Barclays' closure is the second blow for Hunstanton High Street as the New Year gets under way, with troubled clothes chain M&Co also set to close its branch in the town.

It has not yet revealed its plans for the building. A former NatWest across the road, which closed down almost 10 years ago, became the home of Hunstanton Heritage Centre.
