A neighbour said he heard a disturbance at a bungalow where a disabled woman was murdered, as police searched gardens and drains around the property where she was killed.
The 47-year-old's body was found at her home in Beechwood Road, near the Oasis Community Centre in Wisbech, on Tuesday morning. Two people are being questioned over her death.
Police were called at around 6.30am by an ambulance crew who attended the property.
Detectives believe that the woman, who has not yet been named, died between 10pm on Monday, January 9 and 6am the following day.
Detective Insp Lee Martin, from Cambridgeshire police's major crime unit, said officers were following a number of leads into what he described as "an isolated incident".
He said extra patrols were being carried out around the area and urged anyone with information about what had happened to speak to officers.
On Thursday police were searching gardens around Number 17, the victim's two-bedroom bungalow, which was cordoned off by police tape and had officers standing guard outside.
The garden of the property, which neighbours said was owned by a housing association, was piled with timber and other materials.
Officers were also using tools and ropes to scour drains for the murder weapon, although police have not yet revealed how they believe the woman died. A post morten is due to be held on Friday.
As the search spread down the road one neighbour said he heard a disturbance at the property shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
"I heard some noise, it just sounded as if someone had tripped over or something like that," the man said.
"Then I heard someone say: 'You've let the ** dog out.
"It was a voice I didn't recognise."
The man, who did not wish to be named, added: "It's a sad thing. It's all very sad."
Retired school caretaker Peter Gray, 82, who lives near the property, said: "It was all quite a shock when the police came over and told us.
"We've been here for 14 years, I think she's been here for 12. We usually keep ourselves to ourselves."
He added one of the last times he had spoken to the woman was when she came over to warn him about a smashed cup in the road near to where his daughter had parked her car.
A mobility scooter was parked in the cordoned-off garden of the woman's bungalow.
One neighbour said the woman was disabled and was visited by nurses several times a day.
Retired decorator David Madder, 78, who also lives off Beechwood Road, said: "I'm shocked, she'd always say hello when you saw her, she had these two little rescue dogs.
"She was pleasant enough in herself, bless her.
"It's all very strange. I've lived here for 15 years and I've never known anything like this.
"But the problem is the whole world at the moment, isn't it. There were never things like this going on when we were young."
Det Insp Martin said: "I would appeal to anyone with any information to get in touch with us as a matter of urgency.
"I understand this is likely to be concerning to local people but we do believe it to be an isolated incident and we have extra patrols in the area today who are there for people to speak to if they wish."
Police said two people have been arrested on suspicion of murder - a 45-year-old man, of no fixed address, and a 42-year-old woman, from Wisbech. They are currently in custody in King’s Lynn.
Anyone with information should report it via the force's website www.cambs.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting Operation Aerospace.
