A dog owner said his beloved greyhound had a "very lucky escape" after it was attacked by another dog on Sheringham seafront.
Ian Roper, the owner of Tidal Wave cafe, was walking along the promenade with his dog Warren on Wednesday (January 4) when the incident happened.
As they were approaching a larger dog, it lunged forward and its owner lost grip of its lead.
Mr Roper said: "The owner was bending over to pick up dog poo when it happened.
"The dog was incredibly aggressive and ripped the lead out of the gentleman's hand.
"So I had to throw myself inbetween them to get his dog off. It was very scary but I just thought of Warren - he could have been killed"
Initially, Warren appeared to have escaped the attack uninjured and the owner apologised to Mr Roper.
The owner then explained that his dog - which is a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog - "hates" greyhounds and any black-coloured breed.
Mr Roper said: "I said to him 'if you're dog is that aggressive it needs a muzzle on it'.
"He said it had never attacked another dog before and that it is just aggressive.
"But there are lots of dogs in Sheringham and this could easily happen again."
As they walked away after the incident, Mr Roper noticed blood gushing out from Warren's paw so he rushed him to the local vet.
Warren's claws had been ripped out and he had a faint bite mark on his neck.
Warren was kept in overnight and given painkillers and antibiotics.
Mr Roper added: "Warren is at home now recovering.
"He's definitely not himself. He is very drowsy from the medication.
"It was a very lucky escape.
"I am not blaming the breed, but aggressive dogs like that need to be properly trained - or at least wearing a muzzle when they are out.
"I just want to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else."
Norfolk Constabulary has confirmed it has been informed about the incident.
