From a west Norfolk livestock farmer to a couple who have dedicated half a century of their lives to charity - here is a list of people in Norfolk who have been named in the New Year's Honours list.

John Cross, from Hunstanton

West Norfolk livestock farmer John Cross has been made an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition of his efforts to help eradicate bovine tuberculosis (TB) from the country.

Mr Cross, who farms in Sedgeford and is chairman of the Bovine TB Partnership for England, said it was "an extraordinary thing" to be named in the New Year's Honours list.

He chairs the advisory group aiming to improve engagement and collaboration within the farming industry while maximising available resources to achieve the government’s ambition of eradicating the devastating cattle disease by 2038. 

Aneeta Prem, Norwich

Aneeta Prem, who lives in Norwich, has been made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for her work with Freedom Charity, which she founded in 2010.

Her charity set up a 24-hour helpline and app for women facing honour abuse and was instrumental in making forced marriage and virginity testing illegal.

David and Ruth Southgate, Norwich

Husband and wife duo David and Ruth Southgate of Reepham Road have been made MBEs for their services to charity and the community in Norwich.

Mr Southgate, 81 and Mrs Southgate, 79, have dedicated more than 50 years of their lives to voluntary work, founding Meadow Way Chapel in May 1971 as well as a 35-member strong orchestra. 

Mrs Southgate said the award came as a "complete surprise" and is at "a loss for words", while Mr Southgate added all the work they do is for the love of the community.

Roger Atterwill, Swanton Morley

A parish chairman whose selfless dedication has helped his village grow from strength to strength has been included on the New Year's Honours list.

Roger Atterwill, from Swanton Morley, near Dereham, has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to local government and the community. 

Over the years, Mr Atterwill, who is chairman of Swanton Morley Parish Council and also sits on Breckland Council, has been involved in a host of crucial projects in the area.

Philip Edge, East Harling

Long-serving parish councillor Philip Edge, from East Harling, near Attleborough, has been awarded a BEM for services to his community.

"This honour from King Charles is totally overwhelming to me," he said. "It was never my aim in life to be rewarded for what I do.

"It's mentally rewarding to be able to plod along in the background and just do what needs doing. I've enjoyed every day of my life in East Harling."

Michael Gee, Norwich

Michael Gee, 64, has been awarded a BEM for his ongoing service to music.

Mr Gee has been a luthier for 48 years.

Specialising in building Spanish guitars by hand, his instruments have been used by many contemporary classical musicians around the world.

Edwin Luckin, Cromer

Edwin Luckin, known to everyone as Ted, has been awarded a BEM for his services to maritime safety.  

He initially started as the station’s maintenance mechanic and tractor driver, responsible for launching and recovering the lifeboat.

Mr Luckin was made Senior Helmsman of the town’s new inshore lifeboat in 1967 during which he is credited with saving many lives.

In 2020, he was presented with his 60 years’ Long Service Award, an accolade bestowed on very few RNLI volunteers.

Coral Warren, Wymondham

Coral Warren has been awarded a BEM after overcoming cancer and running a post-surgery support group called Sport Action for Women with or after Cancer.

Ms Warren, who founded the group in 1995, was a professional badminton coach and tutor assessor at Norwich Sports Village between 1988 and 2006.

Bruno Peek, Gorleston

Eastern Daily Press:

Royal pageantmaster Bruno Peek, of Gorleston, has been made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.

The award, which is a personal gift of the King, recognises Mr Peek’s work in organising the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee beacons project in June.

Gabrielle Skipper, Watton

Gabrielle Skipper has been awarded a BEM after running Watton Thursday Club, a club for adults with learning disabilities, for several decades. 

Commenting on her behalf, vice-chairman Alison Dickson said Mrs Skipper was "very deserving" of the honour. 

"I am absolutely thrilled and so will be all her members and the committee," she said.

Valerie Blackmur, King's Lynn

Valerie Blackmur, from King's Lynn, was awarded a BEM for services to the community in King's Lynn.
