There will be sadness as the bell sounds at a pub and function room for the final time as a couple call last orders this weekend.

For the past 16 years Mark and Maxine Riches have been leaseholders of The King Alfred public house and Alfie's function room and music venue on Burnt Hill Way, Lowestoft.

And "going out with a bang" ahead of retirement from the pub trade, a special ticketed-only New Year's Eve party night for an expected 200 people is being held on Saturday, December 31.

Marking the end of an era, Mrs Riches said: "It's going to be an emotional night."

After running the former Lillie Langtry pub - now the Pear Tree Inn - on Unthank Road, Norwich for six years, the couple "saw this place and fell in love with it".

That was 16 years ago, as they took on the former Piper's Club and converted it back to The King Alfred.

The couple then opened a thriving function room to boost the local community pub, which has since been open 11 years to cater for weddings, christenings, engagements, birthday parties and wakes.

This Saturday evening will mark their final special function - a New Year's Eve party, which includes a buffet, party cannons and a big balloon drop for raffle prizes.

Sophie Wilkes, who has worked weekends at the pub for the past four years, said: "So many customers are gutted that Mark and Maxine are leaving after 16 years.

"The pub is such a popular place and is booked up every weekend with functions."

Mr and Mrs Riches - who have leased the pub from Lacons - said: "We've had some lovely times and met some wonderful people in this trade.

"Sadly, long, long before the cost of living crisis and the increased gas and electricity prices had come in we had already made our minds up to retire."

While it is understood that the pub owners have yet to make a decision on its future, Mr Riches said: "We've had a great time - Lacons, the landlords, have been brilliant, and we've always had great staff who have been behind us and 100pc committed."

Mrs Riches added: "I just hope the pub is not boarded up - it is too pretty to see it all boarded up."

The couple will be moving to Bungay and they are "looking forward to retirement".

Party night

Mr and Mrs Riches will host a private function on Friday night, before the special New Year's Eve bash.

Mrs Riches said: "I will miss a lot of people around me, the lovely friends we've made in the 16 years we've been here.

"It will feel weird and I think there will be one or two tears rolling down (on Saturday night) and I am sure it will be emotional.

"We have had a lot of memories, having been in the industry for 22 years."

A few tickets remain for the New Year's Eve party night - with details available from 01502 573958.

Mrs Riches said: "We have a DJ, buffet, massive party cannons being fired at midnight, and we will also release balloons full of raffle tickets with the chance to win around 100 prizes."
