King's Lynn's former main post office could be converted into shops and flats.

Developer Telereal Trilllium wants to convert the ground floor of the building, on Baxter's Plain, into a shopping arcade.

I has applied for planning permission to convert the upper floors of the postr office, which closed in 2007, into offices and 27 one and two-bedroom flats.

In a statement accompanying its application, the firm says: 'All these uses sit comfortably with the adjoining uses and enhance the local community.

Changes to the fabric of the building would include new stairs and lifts and conversion of some of the roof space into flats.

Plans also include a first floor courtyard, which would be a communal open space and garden for the flats.

Telereal adds the 'large expanse' of roof off the wing of the building facing Blackfriars Street could acommodate a 'significant array' of solar panels.

It says the building is in a poor state of repair and all of its windows need replacing. If the development is given planning permission, work would begin next year.
