Artwork depicting some of the best of the county's modern architecture has been unveiled to kick-start the return of the biennial Festival of Architecture for Norfolk and Norwich.

The festival, known as FANN13, is held by the Norfolk Association of Architects every two years to celebrate the county's contemporary architecture.

The festival's packed programme of events officially starts on Thursday, October 10 continuing through until Thursday, November 7.

But Norwich artist Richard Horne yesterday started a series of FANN13 exhibitions in galleries and cafes around the city when his Revolutionary Norwich series was unveiled at the Workshop cafe in Earlham Road. The exhibition will continue at the Workshop until October 31 and features larger screen prints and smaller Gocco prints.

Mr Horne, who is 31 and lives in the Golden Triangle area of Norwich, explained: 'It's a bit complicated but basically the Gocco prints are developed from a Japanese machine that was popular in the 1970s but has been discontinued.

'It's kind of like screen printing but rather than pulling through a machine, you kind of press it. They are similar but both come out really nicely through this process.'

Some of Mr Horne's prints of London landmarks are also on display, including St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster and Battersea Power Station. He added: 'I was part of the Norwich Print Fair in 2012 and wanted to create some Norwich prints after that. I'm a big fan of Chinese and Russian revolution posters so City Hall leapt out at me and the castle and cathedral followed from there.'

The exhibition starts a host of FANN13 events, many of which are free, and include an exhibition showcasing Norfolk architects' work and talks at the Forum; The Norwich Lecture, this year given by internationally renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira at the UEA; architecture inspired art at venues across the city; and children's events at Norwich Castle and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.

Norfolk is: Competition launched to find best photographs of modern architecture in Norfolk

Matt Wood, director of Wymondham-based architects Lucas Hickman Smith, is chair of the FANN13 steering group. Mr Wood said: 'We have created an exciting programme of activities in Norwich, which we hope will increase interest and understanding of the role that contemporary architecture plays in Norfolk's cultural life and the changing face of the county. We are also looking forward to welcoming Álvaro Siza Vieira to Norwich. His lecture at UEA on November 7 will close the festival. Do come along and meet us at the Forum, enter our photography competition and take part in our events.'
