Volunteers have won an award after transforming the garden at Thetford train station.

Mike Wilkinson and Omar Attialah picked up the 'Best Medium Station Award' for the team of volunteers at Abellio Greater Anglia's 2014 Station Adopters Awards in Norwich.

Mr Wilkinson said: 'We're delighted to be recognised for the work we do at the station. This year we have planted over 2000 bedding plants and the team have done a great job extending the flower bed along the platform.

'Shadwell nurseries makes generous donations of plants every year which enables us to plant borders. It's very encouraging to know that the people that use the station get enjoyment out of the work we do too.'

Andrew Goodrum, Greater Anglia's customer service director, said that Thetford station looked wonderful this year.

Abellio Greater Anglia operates a comprehensive station adopter scheme at its stations in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex, where volunteers from the local community contribute to the upkeep of their local stations. Currently, 95 of the 167 stations operated by Abellio Greater Anglia have adopters.

Over 100 station adopters from across the network gathered at the train operator's annual awards ceremony at Dragon Hall in Norwich on October 10.
