The owl was found at a farm in Great Hockham and staff at RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre, near King's Lynn, have been giving the tiny tawny a wash and brush up following her oily mishap.

The wild bird was admitted to the centre on Thursday morning and after vets deemed her fit enough to be given a good wash she was cleaned up.

Staff used normal washing-up liquid and warm water to help remove the sticky oil from the young owl's feathers.

Sue Levings, wildlife administrator at the centre, said: 'This poor owl had really been through the wars.

'She was covered in thick engine oil from head to toe when she came in.

'Luckily, apart from the thick coating on her feathers, she seems quite well.

'She is eating and is bright so we are hoping that after a second wash she will be on the road to recovery.

'She seems much happier now that she is cleaner.

'We are hoping she will make a full recovery so we can release her back into the wild in the coming weeks.'

The centre is fundraising to build new birds of prey aviaries to help owls in their rehabilitation.
