Music lovers have helped a roadside diner hit the right notes for a life-saving charity with a jukebox fundraiser.

Mr D's Diner, on the A11 at Attleborough, has topped £3,000 raised for the East Anglian Air Ambulance after diners donated £1 in return for five of their favourite hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Whether it was hits from the King of Rock Roll, surf rock from the Beach Boys or cheesy pop from Abba, the classic tunes helped owner Philip Dingle reach the target - just in time for the diner's third birthday on March 2.

He said: 'I have always thought that if you are in a restaurant you shouldn't have to pay to pick songs on the jukebox.'

Instead, 60-year-old Mr Dingle decided to donate the funds to the air ambulance - a charity he said, as a motorcyclist, he holds dear.

'I ride a Harley Davidson,' he said. 'I know that the charity could really benefit me and that's why it is close to my heart.'

The Attleborough man has owned the land and neighbouring petrol station for 20 years, but decided to take the plunge and open a restaurant after a Little Chef branch closed.

He said: 'The great thing about an American diner is that it is all simple things that people love - burgers, chicken, steak.

'People can pop in for a quick meal and it pleases everyone.'

And the grandfather said his measure of success is a quick glance around customers.

'You've got to have the grandparents bringing in the grandchildren,' he said. 'It means you are a cool enough for the child, but you don't scare off the grandmother.

'We are very lucky, we get around 4,000 people a month and seem to attract everyone.'

While the jukebox fundraising is an ongoing project, Mr Dingle said that he was 'very pleased' with the sum raised.

And looking back on his three years in charge, he said the main thing he had learnt was 'to give people what they want'.

'It's all going very well,' he said. 'We just want to keep people happy - of course we can't do that 100pc of the time, but I think we do 99.99pc.'
