Penguins at Banham Zoo will be taking centre-stage on Saturday when their new-look home is unveiled.

The revamped Penguin Cove enclosure has sand dunes, an extended shallow water area, a new visitor boardwalk and is covered by a net.

Martin Goymour, chief executive officer of Zoological Society of East Anglia which owns the zoo near Diss, said: 'Penguin Cove will be an exciting new home for our colony of black-footed penguins, and provide an interesting perspective of them in their new home for our visitors.

'Entirely financed by donations, sponsorships and proceeds of many fundraising activities Penguin Cove is intended to enhance the life of our penguin colony, which will hopefully continue to improve upon the more than 100 youngsters bred at Banham Zoo over the years.

'Penguin Cove is protected by a huge net that keeps marauding seagulls at bay and it has also enabled other free flying bird species to be added, in this case spoonbills.

'I am exceedingly proud of what has been achieved with the ultimate beneficiaries being our penguins who get a much larger new home with lots of enrichment.

'The fact that this has been funded by visitors and fund raising activities is amazing, and I am proud of the fact that the quality construction work has been undertaken our own staff.'
