Members of the Rotary clubs of Aylsham, Holt and North Walsham were out on the streets with collecting tins in their towns on a day last week.

In Aylsham, Rotarians collected £4,130 on Saturday in the town and outside Tesco's, enough to buy seven 'Shelter Boxes', which contain all that a homeless family or group of 10 needs to sustain themselves, apart from food and water.

They include a tent, warm beds, a water-purifying kit, blankets, cooking equipment, and tools. The box also has some crayons and colouring books for children to use.

Holt and District Rotary Club were also out on Saturday, in Budgens store.

They collected £1,333.90 which will be sent directly to the Rotary Disaster Committee in Kathmandu, made up from Nepalese Rotary members who know where the money is most needed and intend to build 1,000 low-cost homes as quickly as possible.

Rotarians from North Walsham collected almost £1,200 on Thursday, the town's market day, which will pay for two Shelter Boxes.

They had a Shelter Box tent erected in the churchyard, with its equipment inside, to show donors what their money would buy.

Some boxes were already in Nepal before the April 25 earthquake as it was deemed to be a high-risk area. And now a Shelter Box team has arrived in the country and is working with the survivors, having set up a unit as a mobile health clinic.
