Firefighters at Great Yarmouth fire station took part in a national collective remembrance event on July 9.

The event marked the 30,000th sounding of the last post at the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium,

The last post – the traditional salute to the fallen warrior – has been sounded daily at the Menin Gate Memorial since July 1, 1928 to express the gratitude of Belgium to those who died for its freedom and independence.

The only exception to this was during the four years of the German occupation of Ypres from 1940 to 1944. The daily ceremony was instead continued in England at Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey.

On the evening that Polish forces liberated Ypres the ceremony was resumed at the Menin Gate, in spite of the heavy fighting still going on in other parts of the town. Bullet marks can still be seen on the memorial from that time.

To mark the 30,000th sounding, the Last Post association invited Fire Service colleagues around the world to participate in a moment of collective remembrance known as 'A Tribute for the Tribute'.

The parade at Great Yarmouth fire station involved the Fire & Rescue Service, Great Yarmouth Deputy Mayor Cllr Marlene Fairhead, the Fire Service Cadets and the Royal Marine Cadets.
