A pair of flashing 40mph speed signs have been ceremoniously switched on by Elizabeth Truss MP.

The signs, on the A1066 crossroads in Garboldisham, were installed after a public meeting in 2014 kick-started a campaign by village residents to fundraise for the much-needed signs.

A committee of locals totted up the £10,000 needed to erect the two signs with the support of the Parish Partnership Scheme, contributions from local firms, Garboldisham Parish Council and the residents themselves.

Elizabeth Truss, MP for South West Norfolk and Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: 'I am delighted that the speed signs have now been installed and praise must be given to local residents for all their hard work in helping to secure the signs in Garboldisham.

'I do hope the new road safety measures prove effective in reducing the speed of traffic in the village.'

Robin Knowles, committee chairman and former fire officer for almost 30 years with Norfolk Fire Service, said: 'Having attended and witnessed the results of a host of road traffic accidents I am fully aware of the heartache such incidents cause.

'With the erection of the flashing speed signs, motorists are given a reminder of just what maximum speed they should be travelling at.'

Mr Knowles, 73, said 'If only one life is saved by our efforts then it will be judged a huge success.

'To observe the traffic calming signs now in operation gives me a sense of achievement and satisfaction, hoping that in future, traffic passing through the village I love, will have been made so much safer for both motorists and pedestrians alike.'

The committee thanked all parish councillors, Breckland District councillors and county councillors for their assistance with the project.

The group are now fundraising to install two 30mph flashing speed signs on both sections of the B1111 which is a designated vehicle lorry route.

The village continues to operate a Norfolk Police Speedcam Team.

The Parish Partnership scheme is run and supported by Norfolk County Council.
