A Lowestoft woman, who was left with serious injuries following a car accident overseas, will be able to return home soon to continue her long road to recovery.

Almost a month on from the crash in the Cayman Islands, which left Zara Dyer with multiple injuries, doctors are close to agreeing to her release from the US hospital.

Miss Dyer had been working in Grand Cayman when she suffered a seizure while driving, causing her to lose control of her car and then hit a brick wall.

The impact left her with a fractured neck, six bleeds on the brain, a broken shoulder and paralysis on the right side of her body.

Her family flew out to the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida to be by her side.

But as they embark on a £50,000 appeal to bring her back home for treatment so she can be supported by her family, the 29-year-old has undergone intensive rehabilitation which has seen her take her first steps since the accident. Her father Peter Dyer said: 'The doctors met and have decided that Zara could be released from hospital.

'Zara's long road to recovery involves spending five hours a day in neuropsychology, rehabilitation psychology and speech therapy,' he said.

'Zara is still unable to maintain balance or walk any steps without special inputs or aides.'

He added: 'The doctors met and have decided that Zara could be released from hospital. They will be liaising with the medical insurance company and a doctor's surgery in Lowestoft to enable Zara repatriation to the UK.'

With more than £16,000 currently donated, a fund-raising charity night and Indian meal has been arranged by businessman Hanif Jaffer. It will be held on the evening of Saturday, October 22 at the Kirkley Centre in London Road South to benefit Miss Dyer's recovery, with tickets costing £15 available from Cooks Furnishers.

Miss Dyer's work friends in Grand Cayman have also organised a special fund-raising Sunset Cruise along with an auction for a print of Stingrays found in the waters where she used to dive.

Mr Dyer added: 'The family would like to thank the Lowestoft Lions for all their assistance and to everybody who has given their moral support or generously donated to her fundraising pages.'
