Rotarians in Aylsham celebrated those who are making a difference in their community at a special presentation evening.
John Shenton, President of Aylsham Rotary Club, had chosen the East Anglian Air Ambulance, the British Red Cross Norwich and the Alzheimer's Society as the charities for his year. Each was given a cheque for £843.
The Rotary Club also presented £900 to both the Norfolk and Waveney Prostate Cancer Support Group and End Polio Now after the President completed a sponsored cycle ride from Land's End to John O' Groats last summer.
The total raised for End Polio Now, Rotary's flagship initiative, also received a further £100 from the proceeds of the club's Polio Ride in the town's Market Square in May.
In addition, Dee Peart, Luca Wedge Clarke and Aldo De Grandis received individual awards on the same evening. District Governor Derek Rothwell presented Dee with a Rotary Community Service Award. These are given by Rotary to recognise significant contributions by people to their local community.
Dee's award was for her contribution to the development of the Monday Market in St. Michael's Parish Church. Started in 2000, initially to raise money for toilet and hospitality facilities, it has now raised some £300,000 for Church projects.
Luca and Aldo, both pupils at Aylsham High School, were each presented with a Rotary Young Citizen Award.
Luca was recognised for the many things he does daily, the range of responsibilities he has taken on and the excellent citizenship skills he has demonstrated. Aldo has been recognised for his determination, the variety of responsibilities and his general involvement within the school community.
Several of the recipients had brought family with them – nearly outnumbering Club Members – and a very sociable and enjoyable evening was had by all.
