Two-for-ones in pubs always sound good, right? But what about a pub that is quite literally four-in-one?
Standing proud opposite The Britannia Pier in Great Yarmouth is The Pub on the Prom, a much-loved local landmark that provides its patrons with so much more than just a pub.
The Pub on the Prom is just one part of the sprawling Prom Hotel business. On site is also Strollers, an AA-recognised restaurant and The Green Room, a smart breakfast room that doubles as the setting for The Prom's sumptuous Sunday carveries. Then there's the four star, 50-room Prom Hotel itself, run by the Scott family who have local hospitality running through their veins.
Rodney Scott runs the Pier Hotel and Pub on the Pier in Gorleston but it was his son, Ian, who acquired The Prom Hotel for the family business back in 2004.
Since then he has bought the neighbouring Sandringham, No. 78 and Fairholme hotels to extend the business and they have placed The Pub on the Prom right at the heart of this well-oiled operation.
Thanks to the expansion, this thriving establishment now boasts a busy outdoor patio area and a games room that features a 'dial-a-beer' phone for anyone who can't be bothered to ferry their drinks back to the pool table.
This pub is by turns busy and buzzy and make no mistake: it is also big! It doesn't do anything by halves, certainly not the menu – which offers a gargantuan selection of freshly prepared goodies that covers everything from a shareable fish platter to tempura king prawns and sautéed scallops (and most stops in between).
There are meal deals, kids' options and entertainment galore on offer here – everything you'd expect from a pub in this location – and a chance to sup alongside celebrity too: whether a tribute Lady Gaga - who's been known to high-kick her way along the bar – to the real Jim Davidson whom The Pub on the Prom counts as just one of its famous customers.
Need to know.
Opening Hours:
Sunday to Thursday 10am to midnight.
Friday and Saturday 10am to 2am.
Food (available in the bar every night until 9pm):
The Pub on the Prom serves up all the classics you'd expect from a pub, and a pub on the coast at that. But the burgers (smokey bacon and cheddar - £10.95) and cottage pie (£8.75) are only one small part of the story on what is a massive menu.
The Prom Hotel has just received an AA rosette for culinary excellence and the kitchens that feed the hotel residents and Strollers restaurant also provides for The Pub on the Prom. So if a salad, sandwich or something from the grill can't tempt you maybe a confit lof duck (£13.50), vegan penang Ccrry (£12.50) or seabass singapore noodles (£15) can.
Six of the best with Moira Scott-Peek, family representative, The Prom Hotel:
1. When's the BEST time to visit your pub?
Well it's got to be 24/7 because we're a hotel as well so you can stay here all the time!
2. What's the BEST memory you have of your pub?
Our opening day, and thankfully it's all gone well since then.
3. What's the BEST pint you serve?
There is no one best pint – they're all fantastic!
4. What's the BEST dish on the menu?
For me it's fish and chips but basically whatever a customer picks – that's the best dish.
5. What's the BEST hangover cure known to Man?
Hair of the dog – whatever you've drunk the night before, you've got to have it the next morning.
6. And finally, what's the BEST pub in Norfolk (apart from yours)?
The Pub on the Pier in Gorleston (the Pub on the Prom's sister pub) – there's no other answer for it.
