Birdwatchers from across the country have been heading to a north Norfolk seaside resort to see a rare bird normally found during the winter in southern Europe.

Mick Hill, a keen amateur who captured the bird on camera, said: 'For the last few days a beautiful male black redstart has been gracing Sheringham with his appearance.

'He has been seen along the Prom, near the lifeboat station. Birders from around the country have been appearing to see this little bird. I don't know the exact numbers but it's definitely bringing people into Sheringham.

'He's an insect eater and seems to be quite active. He does not seem to be bothered by people.'

A spokesman for the RSPB said: 'Male black redstarts do winter in north Norfolk but in small numbers, so it is quite rare to see one.

'They love urban areas, especially junkyards. Normally you would see them wintering in southern Europe.'
