Shoppers queue from 4am for Boxing Day sales in Norwich

Many high street shops opened their doors before 9am to eager shoppers. Among those, were Kim Claxton and Kate Nixton from Wroxham.

They had started their sale shopping at Longwater before 5am, before making their way to the city centre at 7.30. They expect to be home just in time for lunch.

They said: 'For us, it's a family tradition. We escape the house and come out for a morning of shopping. Each year we get money and gift vouchers for Christmas. We tend to do our Christmas shopping online, but with sales shopping, we come out to the shops.'

Norwich resident Sukesh Chintakunta took to the shops in the city centre. He believed there was still a buzz about going out to the Boxing Day sales. He said: 'Every year we come to the city centre to get deals at the big clothing brands like Next. Coming early gives you a good selection to choose from. Usually we will have a look online in advance. In order to get a better idea of clothing and sizes, you have to come to the shop.'

Maria, from Norwich, said: 'I come every year for Next. Most things are half price, but I'm a bit disappointed this year.

'Boxing Day is a crazy day. Everyone wants to shop in the sales.'

Julie Stewart, from Costessey, said: 'I've been queuing up since around 4am. Coming out to the Boxing Day sales is a yearly tradition. It's not as busy as it used to be, but a lot of shops now put their sales up online before Boxing Day.'

Sheridan Smith, marketing manager at Chapelfield, said: 'There are so many bargains on Boxing Day. We sell a lot of Intu gift cards throughout December.

'For us, Boxing Day is very busy. The car park was full by 10am and people were already waiting outside at 7.30am for the doors to open at 8am.

December 27 is traditionally our busiest day of the year. We're open from 9am until 8pm.'
