Dozens of firefighters battled to control a blaze that broke out in a car workshop at Brandon this afternoon, leaving one person hurt.
Two crews from Bury St Edmunds, and one each from Mildenhall, Brandon, Dereham, Methwold and Thetford attended the scene in Wimbledon Avenue.
A spokesman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said the building measured 40 metres x 10 metres and was well alight when they got to the scene at 4.37pm.
Station commander Henry Griffin of Suffolk Fire Service said: “The building was 95% involved in the fire. One person was taken to hospital by ambulance suffering minor injuries and smoke inhalation. We have been using an aerial platform to get access from above.
“With it being a workshop there was a concern that it make contain dangerous items and we thought there might be Acetylene cylinders but that proved not to be the case.”
He added: “We expect to be here for a few hours to deal with damping down and making it safe. A full fire investigation will take place to establish the cause.”
Eye witness Kai Bailey, 20, who works next door at Abels Removals, said: “I had just come outside and the guy was running in and out of the building. I grabbed him and said ‘it’s too dangerous mate’. The flames were massive - you could see them inside and they were coming out of the roof.”
