A new photographic exhibition charts the vast changes which have taken place in one of Norfolk's most historic streets.

If ever there was a world in miniature, then ancient Norwich thoroughfare King Street has to be it. This long, long street and the communities off it have seen centuries of change and upheaval, boom and bust as industries rose and fell, with elegant houses cheek by jowl with crowded back alleys. And it really is old – people were clustered along its full length as early as the 13th century.

Now a new photographic exhibition is poised to reveal some of the many different faces of this historic street, culled from the last century of its history.

And it's taking place, appropriately enough, at Dragon Hall, a building which has itself seen ups and downs over the centuries but now stands proud as an historic gem (and a polished gem at that) at the heart of the city's heritage.

Continuity and Change: A Picture of King Street, which runs from Tuesday to Thursday, March 31, is one of the fruits of an ambitious two-year 50,000 research project to explore the story of the area roughly bounded by the cathedral to the north, River Wensum to the east, Bracondale to the south and Ber Street to the west. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with Norfolk Industrial Archaeology Society, appropriate enough given the vast range of businesses which have existed there over the years.

And with an eye on today's scenes being tomorrow's history, King Street Community Voices is holding a photography competition – Continuity and Change: A Picture of King Street in 2011 – to capture the contemporary atmosphere of the area. The competition runs from April 4 to May 6 and winning entries will be exhibited at Dragon Hall during the summer. There are categories for both under-18s and over-18s.

For a sample of pictures of the changing face of King Street see the EDP Sunday supplement in tomorrow's EDP.
