A new cycle map of Norwich has been launched to coincide with the start of national Bike Week today.

The large fold-out map has been made tough and waterproof so that it can be carried by cyclists.

It was revealed at an event held at Cinema City, in St Andrews Street, in front of various staff from Norfolk's district and county councils, cycling entrepreneurs, health, tourism and cycling campaign representatives.

The venue was chosen as nearby St Andrews Plain is the hub of the new network, which includes seven main routes, called pedalways, and many neighbourhood routes.

These form a network connecting the whole urban area, from Sprowston to Cringleford and Bowthorpe to Broadland Business Park.

Leader of Norwich City Council, Brenda Arthur, said: 'The city council are delighted to be able to make the cycle network easier. Cycling is obviously a low-carbon activity, it keeps people fit and it's very social activity, so I'm delighted with the map our officers have produced.'

Jonathan Denby, head of corporate affairs for rail operator Greater Anglia, said that a cycle hire scheme is due to be established at Norwich Rail Station.

While Dawn Dewar, transport co-ordinator at the University of East Anglia, said the maps will be given to new students so that they can explore Norwich.
