It is one of the most celebrated chapters in our region's history. But it has never been told quite like this.

King's Lynn's past association with the Hanseatic League, the trading group which had its heyday during the 14th and 15th centuries, is to be recounted in a new children's book.

The work will be distributed among year five pupils in 14 primary schools in the area, as part of a scheme to promote the town's membership of a new Hanseatic League – a modern organisation aiming to promote links between towns and cities involved in the original form.

The non-fiction work, entitled King's Lynn and the Hanseatic League, which will be launched tomorrow, tells the history of King's Lynn as one of the largest ports in England during the medieval period and its strong links with the trading group.

The book was the brainchild of Dr Paul Richards, a local historian.

Two members of the group, Lindsey Bavin, museum manager of True's Yard and Rebecca Rees, project manager of The Marriott's Warehouse Trust, wrote the book under the guidance of Dr Richards.

It is illustrated by Julian Mosedale.

'It's important for young people to be aware and appreciate the history of the town,' he said. 'It generates civic pride and ambition for the future,' said Dr Richards.

This year marks the 10 year anniversary of King's Lynn's membership of the new Hanseatic League, which aims to build business and tourism links across Europe.

'This book, which is the first of its kind in England, will help people realise the international importance of the Hanseatic League. We are talking about making King's Lynn a more prosperous and better place to live.

'Let's hope this book will fire a few young bellies,' said Dr Richards, who gives history tours of the town.

Last year True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum, The Marriott's Warehouse Trust, The King's Lynn Town Guides and King's Lynn Hanseatic Club joined forces to create a series of cultural events to celebrate the 10th anniversary.
