A rare pre-war railway poster advertising Lowestoft as a holiday destination has made a welcome return home – after been sold at an auction in America.

The poster, which was produced in the 1930s and is emblazoned with the words 'Lowestoft, It's Quicker By Rail,' was bought by a keen collector from Lowestoft for a total of $1,250 (£846).

And after jet-setting back from the USA into Lowestoft for a few days, the poster has continued a remarkable journey around the world with new owners George and Joyce Redpath – as it now takes 'pride of place' at their home for the next couple of years in Borneo.

But before Mr and Mrs Redpath headed out for Asia, there was time to proudly pose with the poster in Pakefield.

The poster was designed by Yorkshire-born artist Kenneth Shoesmith and produced by the London and North Eastern Railway in about 1936.

Mr Redpath was successful with his online bid at Swann Galleries' vintage posters sale in New York – having first heard about the auction through the EDP.

He said: 'I was in Malaysia, working for Shell, when I saw the article online about the rare Lowestoft poster. It struck a chord, as I have been through those pier heads on numerous occasions for my work. I like old posters and so I thought – let's see if I can get it back here to Lowestoft.'

In recent years these type of posters – which once adorned railway station platforms and waiting rooms – have become increasingly sought after.

Now the proud owner of the Lowestoft railway poster, Mr Redpath said: 'It is great to have won the auction. The plan is to get it framed and then it will take pride of place as we live on the island of Borneo. We will bring it back in a couple of years when we return to Lowestoft. It is lovely it will be back to reside once again in Lowestoft.'
