The clock is ticking and there are just hours left to pick up those last minute presents in time for the big day. Here is our hour-by-hour guide to where you can shop on Christmas Eve in Norfolk.

00:00 - The Asda Superstore on Drayton High Road is open from midnight until 7pm so head here to kick start the last minute shopping. You can cater for all the family here. Search the kids' toys aisle for unclaimed Lego sets and action figures and satisfy the grandparents in the sweets aisle with a bag of Werther's Originals. On your way out, pick up a coffee from the McDonalds – it's going to be a long day.

07:00 – The rest of the large supermarkets (Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Marks and Spencer) open. You'll find much of the same fare as Asda, although M&S may add a touch of class to anything you pick up. Ready packed gifts sets such as beauty hampers are a good bet for men and women of any age, although this unimaginative gift will give away just how late you left it.

08:00 – The king of Christmas shops, John Lewis, opens. John Lewis' Christmas ad dominated the advert market for nearly a decade – was anyone left dry-eyed after last year's 'Man on the Moon'? – making it a shopping destination you can trust to relieve you of your present panic. Chapelfield shopping centre also opens.

09:00 – Castle Mall opens. Rummage though rails of merchandise in the Canaries Official shop, although be prepared to only find sizes 5XL and over. Take a look at The Java Store's enormous range of candles for the world's most generic present. Or, if all else fails, splash some cash in Poundland for those essential stocking fillers.

17:00 – Most shops will begin to close now. The end of this self inflicted shopping nightmare is in sight. However, it's panic stations if you still haven't sorted out gifts for all of your loved ones. From now on you'll have to significantly lower you expectations and buy anything you can get your hands on.

17:00 – 22:00 – Tesco Express is still open. Grab some cheap chocolate, a ready meal curry, and a tube of Pringles. Try and grab some ribbon to dress up these disappointing gifts.

22:00 – 22:30 – Most retailers have shut their doors for Christmas and things have gotten desperate. Head to Norwich railway station where the Co-op is still open. You may find a reduced ham sandwich and a bottle of Coke if you're lucky.

22:30 onwards – An hour and a half until Christmas. All hope is lost. Unless you're on the A11, that is. According to British law, motorway services must provide basic services (toilets, parking, basic food and drinks) every second of the year. The unfortunate soul who is working will judge when you traipse in, looking like you've walked off the set of a zombie film. Try to avoid eye contact as you pick up a bottle of Antifreeze and some chewing gum.
