A woman suspected of shooting at teenage boys who were said to be flouting pleas to keep off Hemsby's crumbling dunes says she is the victim of mistaken identity.

Police swarmed the beach on Saturday, May 4 after members of a youth rugby team were shot at following verbal altercations with people living on The Marrams.

It is said the boys disregarded notices to keep off the eroding cliffs and verbally abused people who asked them to stay away.

Two boys were shot with BB pellets and received minor injuries.

A woman in her 50s was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a class B drug. She was later released and is due to answer bail on July 2.

The woman, who has remained unnamed, has now said she was not the shooter and does not own a weapon.

She said: "I can't even show my face in the village because they think that I shot a child. I wasn't even there when it supposedly happened but I got arrested."

She added: "When the police came they told me I was being arrested for possession of a firearm. Of course, I don't have one.

"When I got to the station, I was told some child had identified me as having seen me with the gun. I never had one. I was questioned under caution and am on bail."

Another witness told the Mail Online: "[The woman] was shouting at them and saying if the dune collapses it will bury them. She is a victim here. She's been wrongly arrested after being abused."

Another witness said they saw the suspect shouting at the boys but did not see her shooting at them.
