Harry Simmons celebrated his new contract at Leicester Tigers in style by scoring his first two senior tries.

The 20-year-old former Holt RFC junior scored twice in the first half as Tigers bowed out of the Anglo-Welsh Cup with a 50-28 defeat at Wasps.

Simmons, a scrum-half, was replaced five minutes into the second half as he made his fourth appearance of the season in the competition.

The former Gresham's School pupil also made his debut in the European Champions Cup last month, playing the final 20 minutes of a 39-0 defeat at Castres. Simmons and another of Tigers' Norfolk academy crop, hooker Harry Mahoney, signed new deals last month.

With fellow Norfolk boy Ben Youngs – whose Six Nations is in doubt after being injured during England's win in Italy on Sunday – the senior nine at the Premiership club, Simmons is competing with Sam Harrison and England U20 international Ben White for game-time.

'Ben and Sam, who have had all the scrum-half coaching under the sun, take me and Whitey through sessions and are always working with us,' Simmons said after committing his future to Leicester. 'We're always making each other better.

'They have both always been here and it's nice to follow in their footsteps, pick their brains and just continue to learn from them.

'It was something that hit me when I came to the club, among so many superstars, but they are just normal blokes and really nice lads.'

Having made his senior debut against Gloucester in November, Simmons saw an early try ruled out against Wasps on Saturday before scoring twice late in the first half.

'The competition is all about developing young players,' coach Geordan Murphy told Tigers' website after the defeat. 'Ideally, you want a mix of some steel and experience with the younger guys.

'With the nature of the game, with 11 players away with their countries and with some injuries, and a six-day turnaround before Gloucester next week, our playing squad was stretched a bit. That is no excuse and we wanted to do better for each other.'
