South Yorkshire Police has confirmed that the two men arrested following Norwich City's clash against Sheffield United, were actually from Sheffield.
A spokesman for the force previously said that both men, who were arrested on suspicion of assault and a public order offence on Saturday, had been from Norwich.
But blaming an internal 'communication error', the spokesman said the information was not correct.
'There was nothing malicious in it, it was just a communication error,' the police spokesman said.
Violence broke out following the Canaries 1-0 win at Bramall Lane on Saturday, with a handful of City supporters allegedly being attacked by their rivals.
Fans took to social media to voice their anger after two people were said to have been taken to hospital following the incident.
South Yorkshire Police said a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault, and a 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence. Both are from Sheffield.
A spokesman for Norwich City Football Club said: 'We are aware of the reports and the club is liaising with Sheffield United and the police to help with their enquiries into the matter.'
