An inquest has been opened into the death of a baby girl who was born prematurely at 23 weeks and died at one-week-old.

Lola-Ann Marie Barnes passed away at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital in May last year. The tot had been born on May 5 weighing just 1lb 1oz (520g).

Opening the inquest into the youngster’s death, area coroner Samantha Goward said: “The circumstances was that Lola-Ann was born at 23 weeks' gestation.

“She sadly died on May 13.”

The medical cause of death was given as “necrotising enterocolitis due to extreme prematurity and extremely low birth weight with antepartum haemorrhage”.

A one-day inquest to determine the official cause of death will take place on June 6 at Norfolk Coroner’s Court
