People who spoke out in support of Norwich's walk-in centre may have had it confused with another NHS service, one of the region's health bosses has said.

Following a consultation into the future of the NHS centre in Rouen Road, NHS Norfolk and Waveney have decided against closing the site.

It came following huge public outcry at the possibility of the loss - which was included in two of three scenarios considered by leaders.

But while the strong support towards the centre has been acknowledged, leading NHS figure Sadie Parker suggested some of this may have been muddled with another service.

Currently, the out-of-hours GP service operates from Rouen House in Norwich - the same building as the walk-in centre.

And consequently, Ms Parker said people speaking out about the centre's importance may have in fact been referring to the out-of-hours service.

Speaking at a meeting of Norfolk's primary care commissioning committee, she said: "From some of the feedback we had it appears it was confusing for people and that is something we will take away from that point.

"It does not help that the GP out-of-hours access is provided in the same building [as the walk-in centre].

"Some people thought they had been to the walk-in centre but reported they were seen at 11pm - so must have been using the out-of-hours GP service."

Currently, the walk-in centre opens from 7am until 9pm, seven days a week, while the out-of-hours service runs from 8pm until 6am.

Meanwhile, the decision to keep the walk-in centre open moved closer to being confirmed after committee members agreed to the recommendation to save it.

However, the move will not be formally rubberstamped until the end of the month, at a meeting of the region's integrated care board.

The board meets on May 30.
