A unique arts project on the cusp of its tenth birthday could be forced to fold unless a third of a million pounds can be raised by the end of the year.
Despite being backed by eminent names such as Sir Antony Gormley and Louis de Bernières, the future of designermakers21, in Diss, is in jeopardy.
It comes after the group was informed that its landlord would be selling the Grade II Victorian property, based in the market town’s heritage triangle.
Now the group has until December to raise £350,000 to buy and repair the building in St Nicholas Street.
So far, the project has been awarded a Community Ownership Fund (COF) levelling up grant from the Government of more than £171,000 but the group still needs to match-fund that amount.
Janine Oxley, a traditional felt-maker, textile designer, and chair of the charity, said there is still a long way to go.
She added: “I believe that creativity is very strongly linked to wellbeing and health. Everyone needs creativity in their life.”
The sculptor Sir Antony, who has donated a piece to sell at a fundraising auction in June, calls the space an 'arts laboratory'.
And it is clear to see why.
Inside are 12 professional studios incorporating lithographers, spinners, potters, painters, mosaic–makers, and metal workers.

As well as holding exhibitions, the public are invited inside at least three days a week to participate and witness art in the making. The group also organises outreach programmes and workshops.
Jacqui Petrie, a trustee, artist and teacher, added: “Without a place like this, crafts would die out. People would forget how to do things like work wood, sewing, repairing, and recycling.
“It’s important to let everyone know what we’re fighting for.”
